Obituary

John Gerald Eddy, 90, of Lewistown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, at home with his family.

John was born on Dec. 29, 1928, in Lewistown. He was the son of the late Everett Wilfred and Jenny Elizabeth (Stong) Eddy. On July 2, 1949, he married the love of his life, Helen Drucilla (Moyle) Eddy. They celebrated 65 years together before she passed away.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Lilly Isabelle, Mark David Eddy, Everett Wilfred Eddy, Catherine Dupert, Evelyn “Blanche” Klinger, Samuel “George” Eddy, James Ronald Eddy and Charles Thomas Eddy.

He is survived by children Linda Baumgardner and husband Harry of Lewistown, Jerri Ann Shank and husband Robin of Milroy, and Mark Eddy and wife Ruth of Lewistown; grandchildren Cory Wagner and wife Jen of Lewistown, Andrea Nagel and husband Kirk of Houtzdale, Ben Baumgardner and wife Candace of Hershey, Alisha Everly and husband Harry of Lewistown, Matt Eddy of Lewistown and Fresh Air granddaughter Florence “Peanut” Cartagena and husband Joey of Butler, New Jersey; and great grandchildren Gage and Stephanie Wagner, Josiah, Michaela, Sarah, and Aunnah Nagle, Trenton and Clayton Everly, Ethan and Justice Baumgardner, and Samantha and Stephen Cartagena.

John retired from Avtex Fibers/Lewistown Specialty Yarn/American Viscose after nearly 40 years of service.

John attended Yeagertown High School. He enlisted in the Navy at the end of the second World War. Then, he enlisted in the Army and served in Korea during the Korean conflict.

He belonged to the Lewistown Assembly of God Church. John was very active in the music ministry of the church and visited many nursing homes and shut-ins with a joke and a song, often on his harmonica. He was also a member of the Gospel Melodies musical group. When he was playing his harmonica, he always seemed to want to play the song that included the lyric, “I’ve got something that the world can’t give and the world can’t take it away.” He had a strong faith in God and his savior, Jesus Christ, and led many people to the Lord.

John loved sports and coached many teams. He also loved Penn State football and the Philadelphia Phillies. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and received a marksmanship award while in the military.

A special thank you to very loyal friends who visited him often: Abe and Pat Dupert, Pastor Richard and Bernice Grimes, Marlene Johnson and Harold Stewart. The family is also grateful to Asera Care Hospice and the Veterans’ staff for keeping John comfortable at home.

John’s family was the joy of his life. He loved to spend time with all of them.

Pap and Dad, you have been such a huge part of your family’s lives. We love you so very much and cannot begin to say how deeply you will be missed.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Lewistown Assembly of God Church, 160 Summit Drive, Lewistown. Family and friends will be received for a viewing from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the church and from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday also at the church. The Rev. Dennis Sproull, the Rev. Richard Grimes and the Rev. Kirk Nagel will officiate the funeral. A graveside military service will be conducted by VFW Post 70. Interment will be at Juniata Memorial Park cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Asera Hospice Care.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Barr Funeral Home and Crematory, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
